In the Federal Capital the negative vote was more relevant in the highest social sectors

Oct-19-01

A Centro de Estudios Nueva Mayoria research work shows that in the Federal Capital the negative vote (blank and void) is higher in the highest socio-economic sectors

According to the study, in the two typical constituencies of the lowest sectors (Villa Lugano and Cristo Obrero) the negative vote reported 23.9%, in the two most characteristic of the middle sectors (Flores and San Carlos Norte) it rose to 27.1% and in those that most define higher sectors (Pilar and Socorro) it reached 29.2%.

As to the vote of the Alliance, in lower class constituencies it was lower reaching 16.6%, growing to 22.1% in the middle sectors and 21.8% in higher class constituencies. While the highest percentage for the Alliance lies on middle class constituencies, it is almost the same as in Pilar and Socorro confirming this party has lost support in middle-class sectors.

Votes in favor of ARI were also lowest in the lower class constituencies –15.1%. In middle class constituencies it reached 15.7% and the highest percentage was obtained in higher sectors –18.4%. This last percentage shows ARI has not had the traditional vote of the Alliance, explained by the increase in percentages of left-leaning forces.

By contrast, votes in favor of Beliz reached its highest percentage in the lowest sectors –20.4%, down to 12.1% in middle class sectors and reaches 15% in higher sectors. The PJ component is perceived in the highest percentage reported in Villa Lugano and Cristo Obrero but also captures something of the traditional center-right vote as proved by the fact that Pilar and Socorro report a higher percentage than the middle-class constituencies.

Liendo seized his highest percentage in Socorro and Pilar with 23.9%, exceeding the other candidates but not blank and void votes. In middle-class sectors, he drops to 8.4% and in lowest sectors he reports 9.7%. It seems the center-right component has been more relevant in the vote of the PJ-AR alliance than the PJ.

To conclude:

a) Void votes increase as the socio-economic level goes up, reaching the highest percentages in constituencies such as Pilar and Socorro, where the center-right vote has historically been strong.

b) Vote in favor of Beliz shows a strong PJ component and votes for Liendo shows the traditional center-right, though both candidates gather votes from both wings.

c) Both votes for the Alliance and ARI are fewer in lowest class constituencies. But in the case of the former, the percentage is slightly higher in the typical middle class constituencies and the opposite occurs with the ARI.
